Meet the Farmer: Luis Alberto Balladarez Moncada

After learning about Luis Alberto’s recent Cup of Excellence win, we can imagine you’re interested to hear a little bit more about the man himself and his award winning Finca La Bendición!

 

Let’s take a moment to travel to the very far north of Nicaragua:

Nestled between contrasting stark mountains and thick forest at 1,250m above sea level, you might find Luis hand-sorting his Pacamara arabica -- a hybrid of the Maragogype and Pacas varieties (both Bourbon derivatives). After the annual December to March harvest, the coffee cherries are washed on-site at the farm, and afterwards dried in the hot sun of Latin America. Luis’ stewardship is of course ever-present throughout this period of processing.

We’ve talked before about Luis’ admirable commitment to quality before -- everything from matching the coffee cultivars to best suit the local terrain and micro-climate, the farming, the harvesting process, the meticulous sorting & grading of his crop, and perhaps most importantly, his commitment to the people which make up his team and broader community.

The result is totally, irrefutably, specialty coffee. We at Bonaverde prefer a dark roast with this coffee, the perfect balance of spice flavour and a medium, heavy body.
